On Thursday 9 April 2020, the CTBUH New York Future Leaders Committee held a virtual program entitled, Takeaways from WFH: How the AEC Industry is Dealing with Remote Working. The event began with a presentation about the Future Leaders Committee from Nickolaus Sundholm, Senior Engineer, Thornton Tomasetti. First to present was Chris Morse, Associate, Interactive Visualization, SHoP Architects. Morse discussed SHoP’s experience with a variety of tall urban buildings locally and internationally, describing their use of virtual and augmented reality on active construction sites. Morse has been working remotely since August 2019, so is no stranger to collaborative online tools. Next, John Locke, Principal Research Scientist, Autodesk detailed the innovative technologies his team brings to architectural practice, including robotics. Locke also discussed some of the tactics his office uses to stay connected even when working remotely, including daily check-ins and happy hours. Jose Armijo, Data Unit Lead, Perkins Eastman then introduced the attendees to the scripting that his team created to improve their digital skills and efficiency. This scripting helps connect other offices to ambassadors for different industry tools, encouraging collaboration. Last, Danil Nagy, Chief Technology Officer, Deluxe Modular, detailed his unique experience beginning a new job at Deluxe Modular right as everyone else shifted to remote working. Additionally, as an essential service, Deluxe Modular has remained open for business, but Nagy has been unable to visit the production facility: "I haven’t been able to see, look, touch and experience the stuff that’s going on...so that’s a challenge.” The series of presentations was followed by a Q&A period, which was expertly moderated by CTBUH Global Future Leaders Committee Chair Ilkay Standard, Founder, GENX Design and Technology Consulting.
